Clinical interest has centered on chronic viral hepatitis, on immune restoration in various conditions, and on use as an adjuvant intended to improve responses to vaccines. Trials have reported mixed results, and regulatory status differs sharply between countries; in some places it is a prescription product, while elsewhere it is sold without an approved therapeutic indication. Because published studies vary widely in design, population, and endpoints, comparisons across them are difficult and no single conclusion covers the whole literature.
Thymosin alpha 1 is a short peptide of 28 amino acid residues that derives from the amino terminal region of a larger precursor protein known as prothymosin alpha. The peptide carries an acetyl group on its first residue and contains no disulfide bonds or carbohydrate chains. Its sequence is highly conserved across mammalian species, which is one reason laboratories treat it as a molecule with a defined and reproducible structure rather than a variable tissue extract. The name follows an early naming convention for thymus-derived fractions and does not imply that the peptide acts as a hormone in the classical endocrine sense.
Laboratory work indicates that the peptide acts on cells of both the innate and adaptive immune systems. Reported effects include signalling through Toll-like receptors on dendritic cells, enhanced T-cell maturation, and increased natural killer cell activity. These actions are described largely from cell-culture and animal experiments, and the precise receptor-level events remain incompletely defined. Studies in humans have generally measured immune markers rather than a single defined molecular target. The resulting picture remains partly descriptive.
Clinical research has examined the peptide in chronic hepatitis B and C, as a vaccine adjuvant, and in sepsis and oncology settings. Results across trials have been mixed, and several studies were small or conducted under differing protocols. Regulatory status varies by country, and the compound is not approved in every jurisdiction where it is studied. Evidence for any single indication should be read with attention to sample size and endpoint choice.

Identity and purity are usually assessed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, which separates the target peptide from truncated or chemically modified byproducts. Mass spectrometry confirms the expected molecular mass and can indicate acetylation state or sequence errors. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping supply complementary sequence-level information, while endotoxin testing is relevant for preparations intended for cell or animal work. Purity figures reported by suppliers refer to the method used and are not directly comparable across laboratories unless conditions are stated.
Lyophilized material is typically treated as a hygroscopic solid that should be brought to room temperature before the container is opened, which limits condensation on the powder. Reconstitution is commonly done with sterile water or a buffered diluent, and gentle mixing is preferred over vigorous agitation to reduce foaming and surface adsorption. Because peptides can bind to plastic and glass, diluents containing a small amount of carrier protein are sometimes used in laboratory work. Working solutions are generally aliquoted and prepared fresh rather than subjected to repeated freezing and thawing.
The peptide was identified during work in the 1970s on thymosin fraction 5, a partially purified extract of calf thymus. Investigators separated that mixture and characterized individual components, one of which they named thymosin alpha-1. The same compound later received the international nonproprietary name thymalfasin. Commercial material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis rather than by extraction, so synthetic and natural forms share an identical sequence. Naming conventions vary across the literature, and readers should distinguish the alpha-1 peptide from other thymosins that have unrelated sequences and functions.
Thymosin beta-4 is a separate 43-residue peptide that binds actin and participates in cell migration; it shares no sequence similarity with thymosin alpha-1 despite the common family name. Other preparative materials, such as thymosin fraction 5 and thymopoietin, contain distinct mixtures or peptides. The shared thymosin label reflects the tissue of origin used in early purification, not a common structural core. Treating these molecules as interchangeable is a frequent source of confusion in laboratory reports and in popular summaries alike.
The peptide was described in the 1970s as a component of thymic extracts, and early research focused on restoring immune function in immunodeficiency states. A synthetic version entered clinical development in the 1980s and is approved as a drug in several countries for conditions such as chronic hepatitis B and certain immunodeficiencies. Approval status varies widely by jurisdiction, and in the United States it is not an approved therapeutic. Regulatory and clinical positions differ, so statements about efficacy should be tied to specific indications and studies.
Thymosin alpha-1 is a synthetic peptide of 28 amino acids, corresponding to the N-terminal fragment of prothymosin alpha. Its sequence begins with acetylation at the N-terminus, a modification that affects stability and receptor interaction. The peptide is acidic, with a calculated isoelectric point near 4.2, and carries no disulfide bonds, so its secondary structure is largely flexible in solution. Molecular mass is approximately 3108 daltons. The native form was first isolated from bovine thymus tissue, while pharmaceutical material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis.
Immunological studies connect the peptide to multiple parts of the immune response. It has been reported to engage Toll-like receptor signaling, to promote dendritic cell maturation, and to influence the balance of T helper cell subsets. Changes in natural killer cell activity and in cytokine release appear in cell culture and animal models. These observations describe broad immunomodulatory behavior rather than a single defined receptor target, and the primary molecular interaction has not been settled.
Thymosin alpha-1 is a synthetic 28-amino-acid peptide whose sequence was first identified in extracts of bovine thymus tissue during the 1970s. The chain carries an acetyl group on its N-terminal serine. Its acidic residue content is high, which produces strong water solubility and an isoelectric point well below neutrality. Material supplied for laboratory and clinical use is manufactured by solid-phase peptide synthesis rather than purified from animal tissue. Different salt forms, such as the acetate, alter the counter-ion content without changing the peptide backbone.
Serine octamer clusters containing 8 serine molecules appear in mass spectrometry. No evidence supports such clusters existing under non-ionizing conditions, however. Fractional sublimation of a 10% enantioenriched sample of leucine results in up to 82% enrichment in the sublimate. Partial sublimation processes could in principle take place on the surface of meteors where large variations in temperature exist. This finding may have consequences for the development of the Mars Organic Detector scheduled for launch in 2013 which aims to recover trace amounts of amino acids from the Mars surface exactly by a sublimation technique. A high asymmetric amplification of the enantiomeric excess of sugars are also present in the amino acid catalyzed asymmetric formation of carbohydrates Sodium chlorate, which crystallizes in a chiral habit, can deposit almost single enantiomers of crystals when evaporating solutions are stirred. This effect, illustrates the role of seed crystals in nucleation process. In a related experiment, a crystal suspension of a racemic amino acid derivative continuously stirred, results in a 100% crystal phase of one of the enantiomers because the enantiomeric pair is able to equilibrate in solution (compare with dynamic kinetic resolution).

All described specimens of Sinosauropteryx preserve integumentary structures (filaments arising from the skin) which most palaeontologists interpret as a primitive type of feathers. These short, down-like filaments are preserved along the back half of the skull, the arms, neck, back, and top and bottom of the tail. Additional patches of feathers have been identified on the sides of the body, and palaeontologists Chen, Dong and Zheng proposed that the density of the feathers on the back and the randomness of the patches elsewhere on the body indicated the animals would have been fully feathered in life, with the ventral feathers having been removed by decomposition. The filaments are preserved with a gap between the bones, which several authors have noted corresponds closely to the expected amount of skin and muscle tissue that would have been present in life. The feathers are closest to the bone on the skull and end of the tail, where little to no muscle was present, and the gap increases over the back vertebrae, where more musculature would be expected, indicating that the filaments were external to the skin and do not correspond with subcutaneous structures. The filaments exhibit random orientations and are often wavy, which has been interpreted as evidence that they were soft and pliable in life. Microscopic examination shows that individual filaments appear dark along the edges and light internally, suggesting that they were hollow, like modern feathers.
== Function == Glutamate cysteine ligase (GCL) catalyzes the first and rate-limiting step in the production of the cellular antioxidant glutathione (GSH), involving the ATP-dependent condensation of cysteine and glutamate to form the dipeptide gamma-glutamylcysteine (γ-GC). This peptide coupling is unique in that it occurs between the amino moiety of the cysteine and the terminal carboxylic acid of the glutamate side chain (hence the name gamma-glutamyl cysteine). This peptide bond is resistant to cleavage by cellular peptidases and requires a specialized enzyme, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (γGT), to metabolize γ-GC and GSH into its constituent amino acids. GCL enzymatic activity generally dictates cellular GSH levels and GSH biosynthetic capacity. GCL enzymatic activity is influenced by numerous factors, including cellular expression of the GCL subunit proteins, access to substrates (cysteine is typically limiting in the production of γ-GC), the degree of negative feedback inhibition by GSH, and functionally relevant post-translational modifications to specific sites on the GCL subunits. Given its status as the rate-limiting enzyme in GSH biosynthesis, changes in GCL activity directly equate to changes in cellular GSH biosynthetic capacity. Therefore, therapeutic strategies to alter GSH production have focused on this enzyme.

=== Regulatory scrutiny and international expansion (2025–2026) === In June 2025, Hims & Hers acquired the London-based European digital health platform ZAVA for undisclosed cash consideration, extending the company's presence into Germany, France, and Ireland alongside deeper reach into the United Kingdom. In August 2025, Bloomberg reported that the Federal Trade Commission had been investigating the company's advertising claims and subscription cancellation practices for more than a year. On September 9, 2025, the FDA sent Hims & Hers a warning letter as part of a broader enforcement effort targeting more than 100 drug advertisers, faulting the company for statements on its website claiming that its compounded products contained "the same active ingredient" as FDA-approved Ozempic and Wegovy. On February 5, 2026, Hims & Hers introduced a compounded oral semaglutide pill for the first month, undercutting Novo Nordisk's newly approved branded oral Wegovy pill. Novo Nordisk announced its intention to sue the company for patent infringement related to U.S. Patent No. 8,129,343, which protects the semaglutide molecule until December 2031. On February 7, 2026, Hims & Hers announced it would withdraw the compounded oral pill from its platform. Novo Nordisk formally filed the patent infringement suit in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware on February 9, 2026.
== Toxicological experiments == During the 1980s the Philip Morris Tobacco Company carried out research on sidestream smoke at the Institut für Biologische Forschung, although this was not voluntarily published. This study found that sidestream smoke is nearly four times more toxic than mainstream smoke per metric gramme. They also found that sidestream condensate was nearly three times more toxic than mainstream smoke as well as 2–6 times more tumourigenic per gram than mainstream condensate when applied to the skin of a mouse; results also showed that sidestream smoke hinders an animal's ability to reach a weight that is considered normal. The research team concluded that the only way to protect oneself from sidestream smoke was to be in smoke-free public places and workspaces.
==== Resignation of Walter Ayala ==== On 4 November 2021, the General Commander of the Army, José Vizcarra Álvarez, and Jorge Luis Chaparro, the General Commander of the Air Force, were relieved from their duties. Both had served in their positions for 3 months prior to their removal. On 8 November 2021, Vizcarra claimed that President Castillo, Defense Minister Walter Ayala, and presidential secretary Bruno Pacheco had pressured him to irregularly promote two colonels. Vizcarra claimed that his refusal to promote them led to him being removed as General Commander of the Army. Subsequently, members from the Congressional opposition denounced the alleged irregularities. They began to prepare a motion of interpellation against the Defense Minister, which would allow Congress to question him on the incident. Jorge Montoya, the spokesperson of Popular Renewal, stated that following the interpellations he would impeach Ayala. Afterward, Ayala stated that he was evaluating resigning as Minister of Defense due to "continuous attacks." However, he denied claims that he had interfered with the promotions. Afterward, several other generals affirmed that the Secretary of the Presidency had interfered with promotions. Chaparro, the former commander of the Air force, claimed that he had been asked on 3 occasions to promote people who did not have the necessary skills. The leader of Free Peru, Vladimir Cerrón, distanced his party from the scandal, saying that Free Peru does not lead the current government.
== Data == SIRIUS is using data from liquid-chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). It requires high-resolution, high mass accuracy MS1 and MS2 data as input. LC is not mandatory for SIRIUS, however is often required to separate individual compounds in complex samples.
RGFP966 is a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, specifically acting as a highly selective HDAC3 inhibitor, with an IC50Tooltip half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 80 nM and no inhibition of other HDACs at concentrations of up to 15,000 nM or 20,000 nM. It enhances cognition, memory, and learning in rodents. The drug reverses age-related impairments in memory updating in rodents. In addition, it has been found to facilitate the extinction of drug-seeking behavior in a manner refractory to reinstatement in rodents. Conversely, unlike the pan-class I HDAC inhibitor RGFP963, RGFP966 failed to enhance consolidation of cued fear extinction in rodents, suggesting that HDAC1 and/or HDAC2 may be involved in this instead. Also unlike pan-class I HDAC inhibitors, which can enhance synaptogenesis, RGFP966 showed minimal effect in this regard. The drug increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression. Knockdown of HDAC2 and knockdown of HDAC3 have been found to increase BDNF expression, whereas knockdown of other HDACs did not do so. RGFP966 produces anti-inflammatory effects. It shows antidepressant-like effects against neuroinflammation-induced depression in rodents. Similarly to butyric acid (butyrate), RGFP966 ameliorates sleep deprivation-induced intestinal mucosa-induced damage in rodents. RGFP966 has neuroprotective and neurorestorative effects in preclinical research.

After Harrison Stanford Martland (1883-1954), chief medical examiner in Essex County, detected the radioactive noble gas radon (a decay product of radium) in the breath of the Radium Girls, he turned to Charles Norris (1867-1935) and Alexander Oscar Gettler (1883-1968). In 1928, Gettler was able to detect a high concentration of radium in the bones of Amelia Maggia, one of the young women, even five years after her death. In 1931, a method was developed for determining radium dosage using a film dosimeter. A standard preparation is irradiated through a hardwood cube onto an X-ray film, which is then blackened. For a long time, the cube minute was an important unit of radium dosage. It was calibrated by ionometric measurements. The radiologists Hermann Georg Holthusen (1886-1971) and Anna Hamann (1894-1969) found a calibration value of 0.045 r/min in 1932/1935. The calibration film receives the y-ray dose of 0.045 r per minute through the wooden cube from the preparation of 13.33 mg. In 1933, the physicist Robley D. Evans (1907-1995) made the first measurements of radon and radium in the excretions of female workers. On this basis, the National Bureau of Standards, the predecessor to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), set the limit for radium at 0.1 microcuries (about 3.7 kilobecquerels) in 1941. A Radium Action Plan 2015-2019 aims to solve the problem of radiological contamination in Switzerland, mainly in the Jura Mountains, due to the use of radium luminous paint in the watch industry until the 1960s.
== Characterization == The structural analysis of organic molecular cages requires a comprehensive suite of analytical techniques. Both 2D chemical structures and 3D physical arrangements are crucial for understanding cage architecture. These complementary structural representations serve different purposes: the 2D chemical structure provides connectivity information while the 3D ball-and-stick model reveals the spatial arrangement and actual cavity formation. This multi-faceted visualization is essential for understanding the relationship between molecular design and functional properties. The characterization process usually involves multiple complementary methods to fully understand the cage structure and properties.

The name reflects an early convention for naming thymus-derived fractions. The peptide is characterized and measured as a defined molecule, and it does not operate through a single classical endocrine axis.
It corresponds to the first 28 amino acids of thymosin beta-4, a larger protein found in many tissues. The fragment is acetylated at its N-terminus and is produced synthetically for research and pharmaceutical use. Synthetic and natural forms share the same sequence.
It is usually described as an immunomodulatory peptide rather than a classical hormone. It does not travel to a single distant organ in the manner of an endocrine hormone. Classification varies across sources, and some texts group it with thymic peptides generally.
The broad outline involves immune cell activation, but the specific molecular steps remain under investigation. Different studies report effects on dendritic cells, T cells, and natural killer cells. No single receptor has been confirmed as the sole mediator.
